Ongoing projects

This study is identifying most of the citizen science projects, resources and actors in Spain. The research goal of the project is to analyse the impact of the citizen science on the relationship between science and on society. These research is performed using desktop research, interviews as well as data science for Web of Science publications or Twitter social network interactions. It aims also to coordinate, to support an to leverage the potential of these practices at national scale. We also organize events regularly and publish dissemination article of citizen science weekly in tercermilenio.heraldo.es.

Odour Collect

The Joint Research Center of the European Commissión selected this application under the Third Call for Innovative Apps in the environmental and social domains - MyGeoss. Odour Collect is a new citizen science project to create a map of odour nuisance reports using the nose of volunteers. This app has been developed by Ibercivis to support the research idea of the citizen scientist and environmental researcher Rosa Arias.

COST Action on Citizen Science

The main aim of this Action is to bundle capacities across Europe to investigate and extend the impact of the scientific, educational, policy, and civic outcomes of citizen science with the stakeholders from all sectors concerned (e.g., policy makers, social innovators, citizens, cultural organizations, researchers, charities and NGOs), to gauge the potential of citizen science as enabler of social innovation and socio-ecological transition. The Action will explore the potential transformative power of citizen science for smart, inclusive, and sustainable ends, and will provide frameworks for the exploitation of the potential of European citizens for science and innovation. I am part of the Management Committe representing Spain.

I am in charge of the General Coordination of this Spanish and Portuguese project with Public Institutions and Research Centers as CSIC, CIEMAT, UPV, CETA, RedIRIS, UCoimbra, LIP, FCCN and Ciencia Viva. We have deployed in production our BOINC based e-science platform. We have ported already 12 applications in production from research institutions from Spain, Portugal, Argentina and Mexico. Besides volunteer computing, we have already performed serveral citizen science experiments, such as the prisoner's dilemma experiment with more than 1200 students playing in real time.

Past projects

Using our Digital Science Unit (DG CONNECT) policy officer's statement: "The SOCIENTIZE White Paper on Citizen Science has been a focus for the debate on citizen (cyber)science, developing the ideas and proposing policy recommendations. In this, it has improved the awareness of the potential of Citizen Science and contributed to it as one of the emerging forms of active public engagement. It has been a very welcome and important input in developing a wider strategy for Citizen or Public engagement in European science research activities in Horizon 2020. Several Commission services (including DGs CONNECT, RTD and the JRC) are using it as a reference document, and it is featured in the EC Vademecum for public engagement currently being developed. We wish to promote these ideas as beneficial for both the European science community and the general public, and mainstream them as a very important, yet natural, component of European research actions throughout Horizon 2020". Moreover, we developed our own tools and set of participatory experiments with concrete results of engagement. Really nice!

Open Digital Science study

This study has identified players, analysed the impact of the ODS vision on science and on society, and provided suggestions on how to guide and monitor these digitally-enabled borderless transformation of science. It identifies quantitative and qualitative indicators and a metrics to assess uptake and impact of ODS and will set up a permanent ODS observatory. The study has, in particular, analysed the consequences of ODS in a wider societal and policy context, paying special attention to the current scalability. Furthermore the investigation has provided recommendations for research, technology, development, and innovation policy makers in Europe to improve both uptake and impact of Open Digital Science. The European Commission has published the final study report here . The advisory board of this study included experts such as Francesca Bria or Jose Luis de Vicente.

Art and Science. Reverberadas I curated the expo and simposium called "Reverberadas. Explorations on digital art and science" for the European Digital Art and Science Network in Zaragoza for the Fundacion Zaragoza Ciudad del Conocimiento. Reverberadas includes a dozen works from the last five years, of which three have been new productions executed in residence in etopia_. One of this works, Cosmic Bitcasting by Afroditi Psarra and Cecile Lapoire is exhibited in Ars Electronica as part of the Alchemists of Our Time Exhibition. Reverberadas brought together works by established names and young artists. Local, regional and global talent. The symposium had again top participatns such as Karin Ohlenschlager, Michael Doser, Martin Honzik, Jurij Krpan, Diego Gutierrez or Paco Castejon, and we organized live performances from Santiago Latorre and Jaime de los Rios.

Global Excursion

This project aims to innovate in scientific training at secondary schools by providing a framework for virtual excursions to e-infrastructures. We coordinate the scientific part, looking for e-infrastructure providers and researchers who want to disseminate their techonologies and scientific goals.

This Support Action is a strategic collaboration between EU and China, based in the Tianhe-1A, which ranked #1 in the Top500.org in 2010 as the biggest computer in the world. BIFI will coordinate the scientific simulations performed in order to share experiences and results. European consortium is formed by Engilsh Swiss, Norwegian and Bulgarian partners plus the University of Tianjin and the Tianjin Supercomputer Center.

We have investigated the network formed in Twitter of the Spanish "15M movement" with very interesting results. Having in mind the overall coordination, I participated in some of the statistical analysis of data. Also, I remembered musician times producing the song that sounds in the video which follows events and dynamics of the network. This research is not finished yet and we want to keep on tracking new data. Results have been published here.

Lead by Sztaki Institute, the European Desktop Grid Initiative aims to interconnect Service Grids, Desktop Grids and Clouds. This FP7 project will end in May 2012

This FP7 project follows the path of the FP6 project EDGeS consolidating volunteer computing as an effective tool for scientific computation focused on developing countries.

This project has been accepted as Interreg IV A project with partners from Aragon, Pau and Toulouse. I lead the launch and coordination of this project that aims to connect distributed computer clusters and to boost the use of the grid technology in the enterprises.

JANUS is a ultra-high performance dedicated computer for complex physics simulations. JANUS is based on 256 FPGAs programmed and interconnected for one single application. It was nominated forr the Gordon Bell award. We are already preparing the next upgrade of the machine.

We have created the regional grid initiative in Aragon, with sites in Teruel, Huesca and Zaragoza.

BIFI hosts one of the seven nodes of the Spanish Supercomputing Network (RES) managed by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center.

The Spanish Node of the CECAM is focused on Advanced modeling. We are also developping a Peptide Conformational Database Project. This multidisciplinary projet aims to create and open repository of Protein Folding biocomputations.

3D visualization Lounge

Besides computation, we are also working in advanced visualization tool. Our 3D stereoscopic&inmersive tool allows to see proteins, fusion plasmas and others in a very impressive way. This installation has been presented in several places, but the one we did in ITER (Cadarache, FR) in front of the Prince Alberto de Monaco is the highlight up to now.

While opening new lines of cooperation with the people not-so-close to the science, we created a social network where everybody can share happy moments and happy places. With the TEDxZaragoza event in mind, we'll try to analyze the network with cross-cutting aspects and other relevant factors. Join us :)

This project aims to connect Grids and Desktop grid infraestructures like Ibercivis. We are also porting Fusion Plasmas simulation code to that project.

The goal of this FP6 project is the deployment of an advanced Grid empowered infrastructure in the European Research Area specifically oriented to support the execution of interactive demanding applications.

We won the Best Demo Award in the World Open Grid Forum in Manchester, 2007.

In this project we deployed the first civic computation project for the Zaragoza City Council to run scientifics applications in nuclear fusion.
